notes: the Stanley Cup (Cup) was purchased by Lord Stanley of Preston in 1893 as a trophy for the top amateur hockey club in North America; Cup first presented to Montreal Athletic Association, champions of Amateur Hockey Association of Canada, in 1893; Cup holders offered challenges for Cup, 1894-1913; two challenges made, 1896, 1902-1903, and 1906-1907; Cup awarded without competition when no clubs challenged, 1895, 1898, and 1909; competition stripped of amateur status, 1910, when National Hockey Association (NHA) clubs began challenging for Cup; challenge limited to champions of NHA and Pacific Coast Hockey Assocation (PCHA), 1914-1917; NHA disbanded following 1917 season, replaced in competition by National Hockey League (NHL); Cup not awarded, 1919, after series was abandoned due to influenza outbreak; Western Canada Hockey League (WCHL) joined competition, 1922; PCHA disbanded following 1924 season; WCHL disbanded following 1926 season; Cup presented to NHL champion, 1927-present; NHL signed formal agreement with Cup trustees, 1947, giving league legal possession of Cup competition; Cup not awarded, 2005, due to NHL owners' lockout which cancelled 2005 season
